Mental Health: Building a Resilient Organization

In 2019, job-related burnout was officially recognized as a mental health concern by the World Health Organization (WHO).  Stresses brought on by the pandemic have only exacerbated mental health related issues, balancing changes at home and in the workplace have been overwhelming to staff and to our organizations. When I talk to SUNY employees throughout our system, the refrain I hear is that most are working within changing leadership environments, are short staffed in people and resources and have an ever-increasing workload.

"A healthy workplace is one in which employees and their leaders actively work together to create a work environment that promotes and protects the health, safety and well-being of all employees. Creating a workplace environment that recognizes, acknowledges and promotes the importance of positive mental health is one of the most important things an employer can do to improve their organization."   Visit this Guide from Indeed Promoting Mental Health in the Workplace: A Guide to find out about the importance of creating work environments that support a mentally healthy workforce.

Let us create environments where we can talk about mental health and resources with colleagues; it will help us to, together, create more resilient organizations.  Take some time this summer for either a vacation or staycation to do what allows for your spirit to be renewed, so that we may be ready to serve our students and communities this Fall.
