"Big Efforts, Big Rewards"

It has been a very engaging and rewarding month and semester, with the SUNY CPD working diligently often behind the scenes, designing and assisting conferences and webinars from all corners of our SUNY universe. This month we are hosting: SURC, the SUNY Student Success Summit, 2021 High School Equivalency Virtual Conference, SUNY-UWI Health Research Consortium Workshop, SUNY Business School Deans Conference and streamed the most recent SUNY Distinguished Academy Showcase Webinar.

Our Center is proud to help you lift up your events and supporting our SUNY community members and students. I wanted to share some recent feedback and thank our colleagues for their partnerships in producing stellar online events in the face of uncertainty.

"SURC 2021 definitely seems to have provided a “win” to students in a year with precious few of them. And it was restorative for me, as a faculty member, to see such excellent work by our students.”- Amy Guptill, PhD; Professor of Sociology, SUNY Brockport

"The workshop was excellent and we could not have done it without you. Thank you so very much for all your time and expertise."- Patti O’Leary, M.S. Ed; Project Staff Assistant, UB Center for Integrated Global Biomedical Sciences

"Let me repeat…there would be no conference without your help! My anxiety was alleviated by knowing you were there as a valuable resource to me the entire time. I cannot express my gratitude enough for the one-on-one guidance, patience, and support you’ve provided to me." - Dominique Luke, Program Operations Associate
University Center for Academic and Workforce Development,
NYS Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences

"Everything was terrific with outstanding organization, support, and technical prowess. Thank you for making this an unqualified success." - Richard M. Rosenfeld, MD, MPH, MBA;
Distinguished Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology,
SUNY Downstate Medical Center

- Lisa Raposo, Interim Director

Campus Efforts to Promote an Inclusive Climate

Recent acts of violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) people in the US has led colleges and universities to reflect on how they are addressing acts of bias and discrimination against their AAPI students, faculty, and staff. On Wednesday April 21, the CPD hosted a panel discussion attended by 55 faculty and staff featuring three SUNY Chief Diversity Officers who talked about steps their campuses have taken to raise awareness about the issue and create a climate where AAPI students, faculty and staff feel safe from harm as an integral part of their campus community. Participants also heard from E.K. Tan, the Chair of Stony Brook University's Department of Asian and Asian American Studies department, who framed the issue and provided context.

Engaging Remote Students - Don't worry about their cameras!

The CPD is happy to provide the recording of a hot topic- student's and their webcams!  How do you know whether your students are engaged in learning during your synchronous online classes? The workshop, attended by just shy of 300 participants and led by Matthea Marquart (Assistant Dean of Online Education/ Adjunct Lecturer at Columbia University’s School of Social Work), examines why students may be unwilling or unable to use a web camera during your classes and discuss alternative ways of maintaining active engagement with your students.
