Investing in Informal Learning

Informal learning as conducted at conferences, meetings, and through committees and project teams, helps to build the foundation of a Learning Organization. SUNY CPD employs community building strategies that enable information exchange and collaboration without the boundaries of the local department or campus.

Since 2017 we have utilized SUNY Workplace as our SUNY-wide collaboration and community building platform. SUNY Workplace, as with any informal learning platform, is learner-driven, and we have recently reached over 10,000 learners/users on the platform! There are also 719 groups using the system, and you can search for, join, and/or create your own project team or group, and easily invite others from across the SUNY System. Tools such as file share, discussions, and video conferencing are just a few of the functions provided through Workplace.

SUNY Workplace is federated and uses single-sign-on, so users activate their accounts with their SUNY Campus credentials. For more information about the SUNY Workplace Initiative, see below.

SUNY CPD's Remote Teaching Clinic Receives Award

We are happy to announce that our Remote Teaching Institute received an award from the Continuing Education Association of New York for Outstanding Non-Credit Program Development. The Remote Teaching Institute (RTI) was developed in response to the abrupt move from face to‐face instruction to remote instruction in the Spring of 2020. Following a well‐received and attended Remote Teaching Clinic that ran in March and April, it was evident that faculty needed a more in‐depth professional development opportunity.

Finding Funding for Professional Development

As budgets tighten for SUNY Campuses, funding for Professional Development is often one of the first funds to be cut. SUNY CPD Points and UUP Joint Labor Management present opportunities for individual development.

CPD Points: For SUNY CPD Member Campuses, your professional development funds are safe in your CPD Points Account and are a benefit of membership. Your Campus Liaison can approve the use of Points. Visit our Campus Members and Points Contact page to find out if your Campus is a CPD Member and the name of your Campus Liaison. Points may be used where there is a registration fee for CPD Programs and will be indicated in the registration process "payment type" field.

UUP Join Labor Management Programs: Joint Labor-Management Programs are contractually negotiated and jointly administered by committees formed by United University Professions and New York state. These programs address mutually identified needs and goals of UUP and New York state. Joint Labor-Management Committees are comprised of UUP members and representatives from New York state. The following are programs exclusive to UUP bargaining unit members and focus on individual employee development. Visit the UUP JLM website for more details.

Now is the time to invest in your professional development. Courses begin January 5, 2021 and are asynchronous (on your own time). Enroll in one course in each certificate program or register for the full program to receive a discount. Email us at cpdinfo@suny.edu for more information.

For the next six months, any SUNY student, faculty or staff member has access to these high-quality courses at no cost. Join Coursera for free and browse the catalog by visiting the program's home page. Coursera for Campus also includes access to Coursera's authoring tools.
